Shantanu the Unfortunate-
The book is an account of how karma continues. Therefore it does not matter where the story starts. Shantanu falls in love with the river goddess. He promised to never disobey here. His wife drowned their first child in the river and he asked no questions. She killed the next 6 children. He asked her on the 8th child and she told him about the vishnus. She took away his 8th son.
Devavrat Returns-
King Shantanu found himself on the river banks 16 years later. He was sad. He heard fighting and saw a bowman shoot the river Ganga. He was told by her that this was his long lost son. He had been taught the art of war, and he had learned knowledge of shastnas. Shatanu was in lover again with a fishermans daughter and asked to marry her. He got refused even though he was a king.She was scared that their children would be second to prince Devevrats children. He was sad and stopped doing his kingly duties. Devrarat decided to go reason with the fisherman and his daughter himself.
Devavrat Becomes Bhisma-
He went to go beg the fisherman for the king to marry his daughter. Devavrat even offered his position to the throne. Devavrat made an oath that he would never marry or have any children. "he of the terrible oath". Devavrat took the girl from the fisherman. The king felt bad that doom was over his kingdom. He granted his son a boon where he would be able to choose the moment of his death.
Desperation of Bhishma-
The kingdom remained calm under the power of Bhisma. He acted like a father to his two brothers. One of his brothers was killed and the other became king of another place. He stole three princesses for his brother to marry.
Ambas Ruin-
The eldest pleaded to go the man he loved and he let her go. The other two kept and decided for. She was given to King Shalva since she was already picked by another man. Amba belonged to Bhishma and told him what happened. She asked Bhishma to marry her. Amba got mad and accused her of ruining her life. Everyone refused to be Ambas champion. Parshuram gave her hope and said she would convice Bhishma to marry her. They fought each other for 23 days and there was no winner.
Satyavati's Secret-
Illness took the King V's life. The kingdom now did not have a king or prince. They wanted it to be Bhishma. Bhishma was told that he had a brother that was not King Shatnus. The brother was supposed to be the greatest poet the world has ever seen. Vyas came was his mother called on him. Sage Vyas was not pleasant to look at.
Sons of Vyasa-
The child born to her would be blind due to the girls fear of him. She warned the other twin to keep her eyes open at all costs. The other child will be pale and have bad health. Ambalki sent in the servant girl to accept Vyas. Ambika gave birth to DIrthsharta, Ambalki gave birth to Pandu. Servant girl gave birth to Vidura. They all grew up on Bhishma. There was rivalry between Dirth and Pandu.
The Blind Bride-
Blind Disharta went to sit on throne. But Pandus ran the kingdom with Viduras help. Gandhari blindfolded herself for life.
