Reading Notes Ramayana Part A

     Reading Notes

The first two stories King Dasharatha and Dasharatha's son give us the backstory to the problem going on. There was two primary kingdoms Koshala and Janaka. King Dasharatha ruled over Koshala, and lived in a great big city surrounded by walls, but he had a problem none of his three wives could give him a baby. They decided to perform a horse sacrifice called the Ashwamendha, where you send the horse out and hopes it returns to the kingdom to sacrifice it. After a year the horse returned to the city, and they have a big ceremony with the queens and music to celebrate a promise of sons by the gods.

The next story involves the Gods and there drama. They had promised sons to the king and when they realised they couldn't do this they went to Vishnu the king of universe with there problem. He said he will help them and decides he will send him self down as human, and he becomes the 4 sons of Dasharatha.

Vishvamitra came to the city because his sacrifices were getting disturbed and he need Rama to defeat the. The king sends out Rama and his other son Lakshama to go help the man complete his sacrifices. This is the start of the two young mens manhood.

They went towards the jungle and a woman rakshasa appeared and Rama and his brother didn't want to kill her so they shot arrows at her arms but then she went invisible. So rama listened for her and shot another arrow to kill her. Vishvamitra bestowed Godly weapons to him, and they head back to their base. Here two more villains appear and Rama kills them both, and tells Vishvamitra that he will need his assistance later on.

The next story I liked his how Rama met Sita. Rama was sitting in the king's garden taking a bath with his brother, and sita walks in and he tells his brother this is who he will marry. Sita and Rama will both now be heavenly in love and earthly in love.

Rama goes to King Janaka with Vishvamitra who tells him that Rama wishes to carry the mighty bow. If you are able to bend the bow you get the rights to marry his daughter Sita.

Rama picks up the bow and shoots it knocking down everyone and making a great noise, but the bow snapped. The monarch then pronounces that sita may marry Rama. A strange tall man came and asked who broke the bow, this man worships Shiva. The man said if you are so great withold this bow of Vishnu and as soon as Rama picked it up it strapped itself to his arm and they all said to hail the mighty Rama.

Sita and Rama get married, and then Dashartha decides that is time to decide a new so to take his heir. He decides that Rama is ready for this position.

The king had to promises he must upheld to an old maid who did not want Rama to be king. He must exile his son Rama and make Bharata the next king. The king does these because he has too, but he rejects the maid for the rest of his life. Rama was banished.

Sita and Ramas brother decide that they will accompany him for the 14 years he must be away. They decide they are heading to the jungle.

Dasharatha now lays on his dying bed and his wife comes up to him saying why did you break these promises now you must die. With Rama gone, the kingdom is about to be shaken up. I am excited for the second half of this book.
