Reading Notes Jatakas and The Indian Who Wrestled a Ghost

Reading Notes

Jatakas by Ellen C. Babbit-

The beginning of the story starts out with a little rabbit who is laying under a palm tree, and he is thinking to himself what would happen if the world ended right now. Then some monkeys run by over him and accidentally drop a coconut right next to him and he believes the world is ending. He starts to run and tell the rest of the animals to run with him until they get to the lion. The lion hears him and says take me back to see what is ending the world only to see the coconut. This is a tale that is relatable and shows a common problem in our society. One person can lead a bunch of others to distress. I think I could make some solid connections to the theme of this story. I would have a more significant ending to this story, maybe a death or exile.

The Indian Who Wrestled a Ghost by Katharine Berry Judson-

This is a story of a man by himself who was journeying into the forrest on a warpath. The man first came across an owl and heard it halloo. The man kept going and finally set up camp for the night with his fire and his blanket. An old woman with beads and decorations came calling for her son within the night but he did not move. He laid there and eventually she ran away screaming weird words. The next night came and he started on his path again, but the next night she came back again. She asked him for some of his wasna, and when she smoked it she opened her clothes and showed her ribs which were completely open, and the smoke came out. She told him he must fight her to be able to kill his opponent and take his horses. The man fought the ghost trying to push it closer to the fire where it got weaker. Eventually the sun came up and he was able to throw it into the fire defeating the ghost and going on to kill his opponent.
